Advent Devotionals 2019 | Luke One

Day 1 | Luke 1

Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth” - Luke 1:26

Christmas is one of the times of year it's fun to go to the mailbox because you are receiving more messages of good cheer than bills. Messages of good news and great joy have been surrounding Christmas since the very beginning. In today’s reading we first see an angel of the Lord come to bring a message to Zechariah to tell him his prayers were being answered, he would have a son! And this son would be special because he was to prepare the way for the coming of the Lord. Then we see the angel of the Lord bring a message to Mary, she would have a son, the Son of the Most High. When Mary asked how this would be possible the messenger replied: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. For the word of God will never fail.” Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” (Luke 1:35-38)

What Great News was received by Zechariah and Mary! And what great example the story of Christmas is to share good cheer. God’s promises are still true today, …’the word of God will never fail’. And now we have the wonderful opportunity to be the messengers of the Lord, sharing the good news of great joy that the message of Christmas offers.

This Christmas season ask the Lord to make you His messenger.

Take a moment to ask God who you can share the good news of Christmas with this month.

And thank the Lord for giving us His Holy Spirit to help us.
