Day Eight | Luke 8
But the seed in the good ground—these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it and by enduring, bear fruit. (Luke 8:15)
A few years ago we grew some tomato plants from seed. We buried the seeds in rich soil, watered them daily and warmed them with a heat lamp for several hours every day. We tended them so carefully and watched and waited to see if a sprout would spring forth from the ground. We had such joy when the first spot of green came in! Everyday we would check to see how many seeds had taken root and if they were growing tall and healthy. But this was only the beginning because the purpose of a tomato plant isn’t to be a fun splash of green, it is to produce tomatoes. I’m happy to say that year that we had a good harvest, so many tomatoes turned into salads and sauces with plenty to share with family and friends!
Jesus tells us that his words are like seeds sown into our hearts. His hope is that these words would land on good and fertile soil, hearts that were willing and ready to receive the word of God, and allow it to form and shape our lives. When we do that we are like people who build our house on a strong foundation, we are like people who have found the narrow way, that produce the fruit of the Kingdom. During this Advent season as we are planting God’s Word in our hearts through the reading of the Gospel according to Luke, ask the Lord to give you ears to hear as you read through the story of Jesus.
Pray for a good harvest in this season of your life. May your harvest be plentiful and may the Fruit of the Spirit spill forth from your life and make an impact on your family and friends.
